"Vaavoshi" Turtle Festival

Vaavoshi Turtle Festival organized by Olive Ridley Project was held on the island of Hithaadhoo today. The Festival aims to raise awareness on the threats faced by sea turtles and how to work together in saving this endagered sepecies.

A total of 8 presentatios were undertaken during the festival and we at the BR office is proud to have participated and undertaken presentations as well in which school children from all schools of Baa Atoll islands took part.

During the Festival site visits were also conducted to the children who were attending the Festival to Olive Ridley Rescue Centre at Coco Palm Dhunikolhu.

The organizers of the event, Olive Ridley Project, started their efforts back in 2013 due to the vast number of olive ridley turtles that were found entangled in the Maldives. Ghost nets pose an alarming threat to sea turtles in the country and in 2017 the Olive Ridley Project, in partnership with Coco Collection, were able to build the first fully equipped marine turtle rescue centre in the Maldives. A full time veterinarian and a housing space of eight turtles has enabled the team to treat 91 injured turtles and successfully release 39 turtles back into the wild.

The Festival was undertaken with the assistance from several resorts and dive centres of Baa Atoll.
