Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve Documentary to be screed at Eday Film Festival
A Film Festival was inaugurated on the occasion of World Environment Day 2014 today at Social Centre.Two documentary films both locally produced will be screened during this film festival which are ‘Good practices of Waste Management’ and ‘The story of Baa Atoll - the first Biosphere Reserve of Maldives”.
Two international films which would be screened during this film festival are ‘The 11th Hour’, a movie on climate change issue produced and narrated by the famous actor Leonardo DiCaprio and the movie whic won the 2009 Academy Award for the best documentary ‘The Cove’ will also be screened during the festival which talks about massive ecological crimes happening worldwide.
The Environment Day Film Festival was inaugurated by Minister of Environment and Energy Mr.Thoriq Ibrahim and will go on till June 8.
The first event in the program to mark this years World Environment Day kicked off in the morning at the Track Ground with a tree planting event. Other programs to mark the World Environment Day 2014 include the publication of a report on energy saving potentials in schools, photography exhibition, a music show cleanup program in Male’, and lastly awarding of President’s “Fehi Faiy” (Green Leaf) Award.
Free Souvenir to all visitors to Hanifaru MPA
The Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve Office is pleased to inform all that each visitor visiting Hanifaru Protected Area will receive a free souvenir starting May 2014 onwards. This free souvenir carries the logo of the Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve and the date of visit to the protected area as this will be stamped in the field by Rangers of the Office.
Hanifaru Cleanup 2014 underatken
As part of gearing up for whale shark and manta season of 2014 Hanifaru island and Hanifaru reef cleanup and annual routine maintenance work was undertaken today. Participants in the cleanup work of Hanifaru Island included those from Baa Atoll Council, Eydhafushi Island Council, Baa Atoll Education Centre, Maldives Police Services, Baa Atoll Hospital and volunteers.
Hanifaru reef cleanup and maintenance was undertaken by Four Seasons at Landaa Giraavaru, Seamarc, Reethi Beach Resort, Dusit Thani Maldives, Seasplash and Kihaad Maldives.
The Biosphere Reserve Office wishes to thank all those involved in today’s work and hope that working together with all stakeholders involved we will all be able to achieve the common goal of managing Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve.
The Biosphere Reserve Office also wishes to express its gratitude to Royal for providing transport for the participants of Eydhafushi and Kihaad for providing lunch and RBR, Landaa and Kihaad for taking the responsibility of transporting the waste collected today.
